Bible Study - "Women! Who are We? What is our Role?"

Scripture: Proverbs 31:10-31

There are many answers to these questions. The answers can depend upon who is asking the questions. Proverbs 31:10-31 gives us a biblical explanation of who women are and what our roles are to be.

Today, scores of women are expected to be both home makers and contributors to the financial needs of the family. These conflicting roles leave many women frustrated in attempting to define themselves. Some women are written off, written up, or underwritten.

From Genesis to Revelations, women are mentioned in the Bible. The Bible lets us know there are countless women of days past who had roles in shaping our faith and making great contributions to Christianity as we know it today. Throughout history, women have fought for their place in the world, and, yes, even today, many women are struggling to gain an equal footing in the consciousness of society.

The role of a woman in the eyes of God is the equal to that of a man. She is to be used as an instrument for Him in everything she does. Paul’s writing to the Romans reminds every believer that we have a great inheritance as Children of the Most High God. We are heirs to the promise of salvation and to the Kingdom of God! There are no sex, race, or cultural barriers. All people are equal before God. Both men and women bear equal responsibility to serve God fully and to share in the rewards of their faith.

Women have so many jobs today that it is often difficult to keep up with all of their responsibilities. No one seems to know just what is expected from them. Therefore, it is important for women to learn what is expected from a biblical point of view.

Solomon tells us that in spite of all the different jobs a woman may hold, she should be a source of energy, strength, and dignity. She should do what is best for her family and her community. When she speaks, her words are to be wise and kind. Solomon also reminds women that if they are married, her husband should be able to trust her. She should not be a hindrance to him but a help to him.

Most of all, though, women are to keep their lives open to God and to live so that the Spirit can flow freely. We are to love God with our mind, body and soul and acknowledge Him as Lord.

Throughout this week, try to find time each day to draw near to God. Read His words and listen to His voice. Let Him guide you in your role as a woman after God’s heart.

Reminders
When God comes into our lives, things change.
When God moves in our lives, things happens.
When God speaks, the world listens.
When God walks, the earth keeps silent.
When praises go up, the Spirit comes down.

Personal Prayer
Dear Father, thank you for always being there for me. Help me not be overwhelmed by all of my different responsibilities. Help me find a refuge in your love and courage in your strength. I pray for your Spirit to help me surrender my will and my desires so that I find peace in my heart and peace in my life. Help me, Father, to be energized by your joy, and in everything I do, let me serve with kindness and love. Amen.
