Bible Study - "A Woman of Great Faith"
Scripture: Matthew 15:21-28
Society tells women to succeed by reaching for excellence in our appearance, our capacity to gain money, and in our family life. However, the Lord invites us to reach for excellence by becoming women of faith.
A woman of faith reveals her problem (v. 21, 23)
There are many women in today’s world who are distressed by their husbands who don’t love them, trust them, or comprehend them; by their children addicted to drugs who live lives without a purpose; and/or by their families which are totally destroyed by sin.
The woman mentioned in these verses was a Gentile. She was Syro-Phoenician by birth and spoke a different language. She was a pagan who adored other gods, but that was about to change.
This woman’s major problem had to do with her daughter (v. 22). Let’s imagine her…She is in anguish and suffering greatly. She has been taking care of her daughter probably 24 hours a day with no life to call her own. She is most likely emotionally and physically spent.
The most overwhelming of all problems that parents face are the enemy’s attacks against our children. How important it is to pray for protection for the members of our family against these attacks. Luke 10:19 says, "Behold I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you." The Word of God is faithful. God has given us power to defeat the enemy. However, often families are destroyed completely because we don’t seek the Lord, we don’t seek His power, and we don’t fill our lives with His love. We must spend time alone with the Lord Jesus to be victorious Women of Faith.
A woman of faith perseveres in prayer (v. 22-27)
This woman went to Jesus with her problem. Blessed be the woman who knows where to go when she has troubles. This woman believed completely in Jesus. Mark 7:26 says, "She kept asking Him…" She recognized Jesus as the Son of David, she believed in His divinity, she believed in His power to answer her petition, and she believed that He would respond to her. Even though the Lord did not answer her at first, she continued asking without being discouraged. Because she was persistent, Jesus responded to her request. The Bible tells us that when we "pray without ceasing," we will also see what Jesus will do in our lives.
A woman of faith receives the Lord's promises (v. 28)
"O Woman, great is your faith!" (v.28).
The Lord tested this woman’s faith, and her faith never failed her. Your faith will make you more beautiful than your outside beauty. Your faith will make you more powerful than any type of professional success could. Your faith will make you bigger than your circle of influence. The kind of faith that this woman demonstrated enabled her daughter to be healed. How strong is your faith? Can the Lord say to you, "O Woman, great is your faith!"?
Go to Jesus with your problems. Women with great faith can change the world! Let’s seek the Lord with what’s on our hearts, and we will see our lives change for His Glory and Honor. Amen.
